A spectacular day of world-class Group 1 racing and a special appearance of the world’s best horse Winx are among an array of highlights on The Championships Day 1 this Saturday at Royal Randwick.
The Group 1 $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile and Group 1 $2 million Harrolds Australian Derby take centre stage on one of the great traditional days on the Sydney sporting and social calendar.
Australia’s newest sporting icon Winx will have an exhibition gallop on the course proper at 11.40am this Saturday as she prepares for her farewell start before an expected sell-out crowd in the Group 1 $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes on 13 April.
Australian Turf Club Members can enter Royal Randwick from 10.00am on Saturday and general admission ticket holders from 10.45am to secure vantage points for Winx’s gallop.
Travel on all NSW Transport services to and from Royal Randwick is included in the price of pre-purchased general admission tickets, as well as for ATC Member annual card holders.
Amongst a range of pop-up food and beverage outlets across all areas at Royal Randwick will be the new TAB Betting Barn on the Leger Lawn, an undercover space for the general public with full access to facilities and included in the price of general admission tickets.
Winx’s gallop will be a prelude to a huge 10-race card, which includes wide open betting fields in each of the four Group 1 races, along with the running of the $500,000 Newhaven Park Country Championships Final.
A capacity field of 20 lines up in the Group 1 $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile in one of the strongest fields in several decades.
The Hawkes Racing trained Brutal – who ran second to Winx at his latest start – is the early $5.50 TAB favourite, to be ridden by Glen Boss.
Boss is aiming for his seventh win in The Star Doncaster.
The powerful Godolphin team led by trainer James Cummings has boom mare Alizee ($7 TAB) for Blake Shinn and the crowd favourite Hartnell to be ridden by Hugh Bowman ($10 TAB).
The Group 1 $2 million Harrolds Australian Derby has also attracted a capacity field of 18 runners over the testing 2400m circuit.
The Mike Maroney trained pair Arrogant ($5 TAB) with Craig Williams aboard and Chapada ($5.50 TAB) for Damien Oliver head the market.
The Group 1 $2.5 million Aquis TJ Smith Stakes brings together Australia’s elite sprinters in another cracking field.
