BACKGROUND

Thanks to his pedigree, being the grandson of jockey Jack Carrol and the son of one of the first female trainers, Gary was always going to be a racehorse trainer. He took over the licence that his mother held in Orange in 1991 and that same year he trained his first winner at Wagga courtesy of an imported Russian stallion named Talagar. Five years later he moved to Warwick Farm to pursue his dream of training in the city. Not long after, Gary trained his first stakes winner when Forest Express took out the Vanity Stakes at Flemington. It wasn’t long before he was running 4th in the metropolitan premiership behind only Gai Waterhouse, John Hawkes and Graeme Rogerson, despite having a significantly small team. His first Group 1 winner was Rena’s Lady who landed the Australian Oaks. She was followed by globe trotter Gold Trail who won the Group 1 Railway Stakes in New Zealand before running in both Singapore and in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. One of Gary’s most popular horses was Rebel Dane who raced at the highest level until he was 7 years old and won both the Group 1 Rupert Clark and Group 1 Manikato. Now firmly established in the Sydney training ranks, Gary will always be known as the trainer of She Will Reign, a $20,000 filly who went on to win the richest two-year-old race in the world, The Golden Slipper.
