BACKGROUND
Don’t let the laid-back demeanour fool you, under those curly locks lies a fierce will to purchase, train and race the best horses in the country. In just over 10 years, Ciaron Maher has risen to the top of the Australian training ranks and become Victoria’s leading trainer. Ciaron’s early promise as a jockey was ended because he grew too much but not before he had led the Australian Jockeys team against the Irish in the International Challenge. His size could not stop or diminish his love of horse racing and so he threw all his energy, enthusiasm and intelligence into becoming a trainer. After 10 Group 1s, the partnership was established as Englishman David Eustace stepped up to co-trainer in 2018 after three years as Ciaron’s assistant. The establishment of the Warwick Farm satellite stable in 2019 demonstrates Ciaron’s ambition and drive to become the best. To be the best, you have to compete with the best and the competition in Sydney is fierce which is why Ciaron wanted to have a presence north of the border. Since then a host of Group races have been won by the Sydney stable including Group 1 wins in the Sydney Cup, Tancred Stakes and Australian Derby. The Ballarat training facilities (that he believes to be amongst the best in the world) with satellites at Caulfield and Sydney, a custom-made pre-training and spelling operation at Pakenham and hand-picked beach facilities at Balnarring and Fingal, Ciaron truly believes he has the team and the facilities to be among – if not the best – training operations in Australia.
