The latest look at the fields and tips by analyst Shane Montgomery for Moët & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes Day
October 9, 2021
ROYAL RANDWICK 09/10/21 BEST BET Race Four, 2-COASTWATCH
RACE ONE 12.35pm TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP 1600m
7-MIKADO (J Penza/J Hardy) He’d been kept fresh before he tackled 1400m/Eagle Farm last start and on the day, he performed well above the expectations of the Market Palace. He’s also been kept for his assignment today and he can rate high enough to win
9-SO SAY YOU (B Ryan/T Robinson) This mare needs to overcome a very wide gate to score today but even so, she should not be treated with disrespect. All three efforts since her Rosehill win back in late July have been full of merit with Brock Ryan aboard
4-BAHAMUT (J McDonald/D Chujo) He had been given two lead-up Trials before he resumed at Lismore last start when his effort was honest over 1410m. He is making his Randwick debut today and he is ready to cope with the step up to this distance
11-THE FOSSIL (K McEvoy/S Kavanagh) He’s well advanced into his preparation but he made a metropolitan debut when he attempted a significant step up into this distance range last run/Rosehill. He dug deep to score and he can still marginally improve
RACE TWO 1.10pm MIDWAY HANDICAP 1400m
10-DIFFERENT STROKES (H Bowman/K Waugh) He’s well advanced into his first campaign but he’s in astute hands and he can be expected to hold his form. He was dominant at home (Wyong) last start and he is now ready to make his Randwick debut
9-CREAM RISES (N Rawiller/K Gavenlock) He had Trialed twice before he failed to beat a runner home at Gosford last start but there were genuine excuses and he must be forgiven for his unplaced effort. He could make a mockery of that performance today
12-AKHTAR (T Berry/A Neasham) This colt takes on older opposition but he can be expected to cope. His narrow winning margin was misleading after he struck traffic problems/Kensington Track last start when he beat a subsequent Rosehill winner
7-WILD CHAP (L Lafferty/B Lazzarini) He is a Kembla Grange based gelding who has not been to the Races for five weeks but in his case the break between starts is no minus, he’s proven “fresh”. A step back from 1800m here last start greatly aids his cause
RACE THREE 1.45pm CERRONE HANDICAP 2000m
7-SOLAR APEX (J McDonald/C Waller) He was resuming over 1600m at Gosford two starts ago when he won easily, competing as a gelding for the first time. He then stepped into this distance range when he impressed again at Gosford last start. He can go on
3-YIYI (N Rawiller/C Waller) He’s in career best form and he’s making his Randwick Course Proper debut with this circuit very likely to suit. He always traveled like a winner with this distance range at home (Rosehill) last run. This Race is also with his reach
2-HERMAN HESSE (L Lafferty/C Maher & D Eustace) He is making his Sydney debut. He was produced 3rd up from a long spell when he scored with great authority over this distance after four weeks off at Mornington last run. He has scope to further improve
14-ITA (J Collett/B Baker) This Warwick Farm based mare is having her first start on the Randwick Course Proper and the spacious circuit should greatly suit her. She should enjoy a dream run and when it counts very late, she should have much to offer
RACE FOUR 2.20pm HEINEKEN 3 STAN FOX STAKES 1500m
2-COASTWATCH (J McDonald/C Waller) He was also an Acceptor for the Caulfield Meeting today but this Race was chosen as a better target. His effort was honest after a four week break at Rosehill last start. This quicker back-up can be considered as a plus
6-COTEHELE (H Bowman/J O’Shea) He was spelled after he wasn’t disgraced at Eagle Farm when he was produced at Black Type level for a first time. He resumed last run/Goulburn when he was dominant in a high rating Benchmark Race. He’s fitter now
4-BRIGANTINE (N Rawiller/J Cummings) He was making his Randwick Course Proper debut when he handed in a stylish effort here two starts ago/1300m. His subsequent Caulfield performance/1400m was also full of merit. This slight distance rise now suits
3-HILAL (T Berry/M, W & J Hawkes) He was poorly placed in the Golden Rose at Rosehill last start when he endured a tough run on the day. He’s far better suited against the opposition he meets here. He can regain his best form without causing a surprise
RACE FIVE 2.55pm POLYTRACK ROMAN CONSUL STAKES 1200m
2-PAULELE (J McDonald/J Cummings) He has been produced here on three occasions and he has scored with great authority at all three attempts. He was competing after a break of four weeks when his effort was courageous/Rosehill last run. He’s fitter now
4-GLENEAGLES (T Berry/D Payne) This Rosehill trained colt presents third up, making a Randwick debut. He’s Trialed at home since his last start at Kembla Grange when he stepped up to this distance. He stuck to his task in defeat after he became unsuited
1-SWORD OF STATE (T Clark/J Richards) He is a Matamata (New Zealand) based colt who had Trialed here five weeks before he resumed from a spell, making an Australian debut last run/Rosehill when he endured too tough a run. He can sharply improve
6-KING OF SPARTA (K McEvoy/P & P Snowden) He returns to his home track today after finishing unplaced at Rosehill last start and he should not be underestimated. He refused to shirk his task at Rosehill last start when his beaten margin was misleading
RACE SIX 3.30pm BENTLEY ANGST STAKES 1600m
1-AMARELINHA (J McDonald/J Richards) This Matamata (New Zealand) trained mare was resuming from a long spell here last start when she conceded too great a task over 1400m. She’ll present Race-fitter today and a step up to this distance aids her cause
3-KIKU (T Berry/C Waller) She had been given two Trials (spaced four weeks apart) before she finished unplaced here last start but she mustn’t be harshly judged. She endured significant traffic problems on the day and she clearly has scope to improve 2nd up
9-MIRRA VISION (S Clipperton/P & P Snowden) She hadn’t been to the Races for seven weeks before she did all but win last run/Newcastle. She switches back to her home base here, attempting this distance for a first time. She’s ready to cope with 1600m
6-CHARLEISE (J Collett/C Maher & D Eustace) She was given an eight week break before she struck traffic problems at Wyong and at Newcastle recently. Although she is an experienced mare, she is making her Randwick debut and this circuit should suit her
2-ALL SAINTS’ EVE (H Bowman/J O’Shea) She returns home after a Rosehill 2nd up latest effort when she was competing after a break of three weeks. She was not disgraced against stronger opposition than she meets today and this quicker back up is a plus
RACE SEVEN 4.10pm SILVER EAGLE 1300m
14-VANGELIC (T Clark/G Waterhouse & A Bott) She was only having her second start back from her spell when she made considerable improvement when she stepped up into this distance range/Rosehill last run. She can further progress at home today
6-ELLSBERG (J Parr/G Ryan & S Alexiou) He had Trialed twice at home (Rosehill) before he resumed on that track last start and he quickly overcame a wide gate before he dug deep to prevail within this distance range. He will only present Race-fitter 2nd up
8-COUNT DE RUPEE (R Bayliss/R & L Price) This Kembla Grange based gelding was produced after twelve weeks off without a lead-up Trial when he scored with great authority on his home track last start/1200m. He’s ready to cope with this longer journey
11-EQUATION (T Berry/A Neasham) He began his second preparation since a Stable Change when he resumed from a very long spell here last start without a lead-up Trial. His unplaced effort can be overlooked as he struck early trouble with 1100m unsuitable
RACE EIGHT 4.50pm MOËT & CHANDON SPRING CHAMPION STAKES 2000m
2-PROFONDO (R Dolan/R Litt) He has only been to the Races twice but he is a very promising colt who was responsible for an excellent effort in defeat/Rosehill last start when his immaturity cost him a win. He can be expected to make natural improvement
1-HEAD OF STATE (J McDonald/C Waller) He returned home (Rosehill) last start when he and Profondo were far too good for their opposition/1800m. The distance rise he attempts now shouldn’t cause a problem and this track should suit at his first attempt
11-NEVER BEEN KISSED (R Bayliss/G Waterhouse & A Bott) This filly caused a major surprise in the Market Place when she scored here at home last week but it must be noted that there were genuine excuses for her only defeat during her four starts so far
3-ALEGRON (K McEvoy/J Cummings) He failed to threaten Head Of State and Profondo when it counted last start at Rosehill but he did become unsuited in transit after he drew a wide Barrier. He should enjoy a far better run from an inside gate here today
RACE NINE 5.30pm THE NIVISON 1200m
5-MINHAAJ (J McDonald/J O’Shea) She was given a Stable Change since her last run and she resumes here on her new home track after two recent Trials. She dug deep to score/1100m/Caulfield 1st up last campaign. A slightly longer trip now can be ideal
10-GREAT NEWS (T Berry/K Waugh) This mare displayed great courage in defeat after she became most unsuited here and at Wyong before her 3rd up effort over 1400m/Newcastle was full of merit last run. It can be noted that she’s undefeated over 1200m
12-BELLUCI BABE (T Clark/B Baker) After only the lone Trial, she resumed last start at Gosford when she found the line with determination to prevail. She and On The Lead drew well clear of their opposition late and she will only present Race-fitter today
2-ROCHA CLOCK (H Bowman/J O’Shea) She’s resuming at home after Trialing here twice last month. She will be competing with a significant Gear Change made (Winkers On) and after conceding most an early start, she’s likely to finish off very strongly
RACE TEN 6.05pm DYSON SPRINT 1000m
5-KINLOCH (H Bowman/K Lees) He was very suitably placed at Rosehill last Wednesday but his Connections chose to wait for this tougher assignment and their judgement must be respected. He can relish this journey 1st up today after Trialing twice recently
3-ON THE LEAD (J McDonald/R & M Freedman) His effort was sound when he resumed at Kembla Grange, competing as a gelding for the first time. He then kept trying in defeat at Gosford last start after almost four weeks off. He will be Race-fitter now
10-LEO (J Collett/M Schmetzer) The second of his two lead-up Trials was held four weeks before he resumed over this distance here last start when he led throughout. He should enjoy a suitable run again today and making improvement is not beyond him
12-MARNIX (R King/J Cummings) This lightly raced Warwick Farm based gelding resumes today after Trialing at home twice recently. There were major excuses for his unplaced 1st up Canterbury effort last campaign. He’s better suited on this bigger circuit
