TAB Epsom nominations rise for Sydney Spring's Super Group 1 treble day

September 6, 2023

Nominations have jumped to a seven-year high for one of Sydney’s iconic spring races the Group 1 $1.5 million TAB Epsom at Royal Randwick ahead of the $87 million Sydney Everest Carnival.

A total of 104 horses remain entered for the 158th renewal of the famous 1600m Royal Randwick handicap to be run on Saturday 30 September, 2023.

The rise in nominations exceeds 100 for the first time in seven years and continues a significant increase since prizemoney was lifted to $1 million in 2018 and then $1.5 million in 2021.

The Group 1 $750,000 James Squire Metropolitan and Group 1 $750,000 Darley Flight Stakes are also run at Royal Randwick on 30 September.

A total of 74 horses were nominated for the James Squire Metropolitan and 65 horses in the Darley Flight Stakes.

Australian Turf Club Head of Racing and Wagering James Ross said the three races were on a centrepiece Saturday of the 10-week Sydney Everest Carnival.

“It’s pleasing to see continued strong nominations for three of our flagship races in the spring, and notably around the mile of the TAB Epsom and Darley Flight Stakes,’’ Mr Ross said.

“The strength of nominations for the TAB Epsom further highlight the significance of two major WFA races over the Royal Randwick mile in the 7 Stakes and ultimately the $5 million King Charles III Stakes on Everest Day.’’

“With the additional investment from our partners Racing NSW, this Spring will deliver over $87 million in prizemoney and is on track to attract some of the highest quality participation from Sydney, interstate and internationally.”
