A vibrant Royal Randwick will play host this Saturday to its first day of another bumper Sydney Spring Carnival, highlighted by a stellar field in the $500,000 Group 1 Colgate Optic White Stakes.
The Star Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec ($2.60 TAB Fixed Odds) – trained by Sydney’s five-time premiership winning trainer Chris Waller – will be out to add to his Group 1 tally in the Colgate Optic White Stakes, and further press claims for another big Royal Randwick mile, the $1 million The Star Epsom in a fortnight.
Kermadec takes on stablemate and a crowd favourite in Royal Descent ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds), and Gai Waterhouse’s consistent Pornichet ($6.50 TAB Fixed Odds), while two other quality mares – Lucia Valentina ($6.50 TAB Fixed Odds) and Kirramosa ($12 TAB Fixed Odds) – add further class to the field.
The TAB will add a $120,000 jackpot to a guaranteed pool of at least $400,000 for the First Four, with the Colgate Optic White Stakes Race 6 on the card, and due to start at 3.45pm.
The world-class live racing – featuring five Group races and a big eight-race card – will be matched by the fun and colour that a day on track at Royal Randwick in Spring brings, on the inaugural Colgate Optic White Stakes Day.
General admission customers who pre-purchase a ticket at www.theraces.com.au will receive a complimentary flute of Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial valued at $25.
Patrons are being urged to wear a splash of red to celebrate one of Sydney racing’s newest supporters Colgate, with a variety of other fun options spread across the racecourse, including a carousel, horse shoe toss, live music and an Instagram photo competition.
Australian Turf Club Chief Operating Officer Tony Partridge said Royal Randwick offered the best of Sydney during a popular sporting and social atmosphere at this time of year.
“Royal Randwick this Saturday gives Sydneysiders the chance to enjoy everything good about our city, with live racing trackside and all around it a range of social and hospitality options,’’ Mr Partridge said.
“Just last week when Winx circled the field to win and when Catkins stormed home to the huge roar of the crowd, everyone on track got the full thrill of what live racing really means.
“We encourage everyone to dress up a bit, have a bit of fun wearing something red, and take in with their friends all of the spectacle and fun that only live racing at the track brings.’’
Saturday’s support races around the Colgate Optic White Stakes include a cracking field of sprinters in the $200,000 Group 2 Bowermans Office Furniture Shorts, over 1100m.
One of Australia’s best sprinters Terravista ($2.40 TAB Fixed Odds) trained by Joe Pride and ridden by star jockey Hugh Bowman, heads the market, from the in-form Shiraz ($4.60 TAB Fixed Odds).
Joe Pride also trains the talented Ball of Muscle ($7 TAB Fixed Odds) whilst Rebel Dane ($9.50 TAB Fixed Odds) trained by Gary Portelli and Peter and Paul Snowden’s That’s A Good Idea ($12 TAB Fixed Odds) are among several top chances in a very strong race.
A capacity field of 16 lines up in the $200,000 Group 2 Ascend Sales Trophies Hill Stakes, with many runners also taking their next step toward major Spring staying races, including the $750,000 Group 1 McGrath Estate Agents Metropolitan at Royal Randwick on 3 October.
World racing powerhouse Godolphin’s last-start Chelmsford Stakes winner Complacent ($3.60 TAB Fixed Odds) and stablemate Magic Hurricane ($5.50 TAB Fixed Odds) will again be aiming to fight off an army of Chris Waller runners.
The Group 2 $175,000 Coolmore Tea Rose Stakes has attracted a big field of 14 fillies – with the Queen of Sydney racing Gai Waterhouse having three of the first four horses in the market, Kimberley Star ($5 TAB Fixed Odds), Flamboyant Lass ($5 TAB Fixed Odds) and Sempre Libera ($6 TAB fixed Odds).
Royal Randwick provides free high-capacity WiFi right across the racecourse precinct, as well as free parking in the infield.
Buses run direct to and from the course and Central Station throughout the day.
