ATC Pays Tribute to the Life and Service of Richard Kimpton
Long-serving and beloved employee farewelled
January 20, 2023
The Australian Turf Club has farewelled a long-serving and beloved employee in Richard Kimpton following his sad passing late last year.
Richard was remembered at a special service at Royal Randwick by his family, trainers and racing industry figures, and many colleagues as a wonderful horseman and great friend to so many people in the racing industry.
He not only had his own success as a trainer, winning several races at Royal Randwick, but he also worked with some of racing’s biggest names including legendary trainers TJ Smith, Neville Begg and Robert Pearce.
Richard began work on 12 September 1997 as the Assistant Clerk of the Course at Royal Randwick and Warwick Farm, later as Horse Pool Attendant and Assistant Clerk of the Course before becoming Equine Pool Attendant at Royal Randwick.
It was in this role that he excelled and gained many plaudits and recognition from Royal Randwick trainers for his attention to detail and skill in swimming horses.
A plaque has been placed on a bench in a memorial for Richard adjacent to the equine pool.
It carried a jersey of his favourite team the Manly Sea Eagles and also his well-worn hat from many years of work.
Colleagues fondly recalled how Richard always went the extra mile to ensure the pool was at its best and didn’t mind a phone call to let you know what he needed to make sure it was.
The Australian Turf Club thanks and pays tribute to the life and service of Richard Kimpton.
