Re-living the TAB Epsom - Kolding

October 1, 2021

In celebration of TAB Epsom Day this Saturday, we wanted to re-live some of the magic of previous TAB Epsom winners.

We caught up with Neville Morgan, the Owner of Kolding to re-live and honour his 2019 TAB Epsom win.

Owner Neville Morgan has owned many fantastic horses over the years, including the likes of Rangirangdoo, Shaquero and Kermadec to name a few.

Rangirangdoo won races including the Group 1 Doncaster and a George Ryder Stakes and was the first of several superstars owned by Neville Morgan and trained by Chris Waller. He also owned the now Darley stallion and multiple Group 1 winner Kermadec, which also won a Doncaster. More recently Shaquero, who won the 2021 Magic Millions and the Group 3 Pago Pago.

A horse also close to Neville and the Morgan family is Kolding. He enjoyed a very special Spring in 2019. Winning a wonderful edition of the TAB Epsom with Glen Boss in the saddle. This TAB Epsom was thrilling race that went down to the wire, against another special Group 1 horse in Te Akau Shark.

Re-live the replay of Kolding’s win in the 2019 TAB Epsom here.

Neville Morgan looks back on Kolding winning the TAB Epsom and his marvellous career here:

1. What drew you to Kolding when you purchased him from the NZB Premier Yearling Sale?

Purchased by Guy Mulcaster as many of our horses are. So mainly on his recommendation, but when I saw the Semipalatinsk blood on the dam side it helped with our decision.

2. Kolding is definitely a horse that is close to your heart, winning multiple Group 1’s. How do you rate his TAB Epsom win amongst them?

Very exciting as it is one of the time honoured Randwick miles. We had been lucky enough to win two Doncaster’s previously and the TAB Epsom win added to the honour board. Need another one now to complete the Quaddie.

3. Following on from Kolding’s Group 1 TAB Epsom  and Group 3 Bill Ritchie wins at the 2019 ATC Spring Carnival, Kolding went onto win the inaugural Golden Eagle that Spring. What was it like being trackside at Rosehill Gardens winning the Golden Eagle/TAB Epsom double with Glen Boss on board?

Fantastic day as my daughters and their husbands were able to be there. We also had a winner at Flemington that day and had arranged an TAB Epsom celebration that night at Icebergs which quickly became a double celebration. Great to share it with Chris and Steph Waller, Bossy and wife Sloane, Guy and Ienna Mulcaster and many of our other friends  from the stable.

4. How do you rate Kolding amongst the many great horses you have owned?

Been lucky enough to have raced a number of very good horses and Kolding is up there with the best. Although our first G1 winner was Rangirangdoo and he will always hold a special place in our hearts.
