Entries for the $3.5 million Longines Golden Slipper have reached a record high after the Australian Turf Club received 358 second acceptances for the world’s richest race for two year olds.

The 358 second acceptances is a huge jump from last year’s 259, and a seventeen per cent jump on the previous record of 304 nominations in 2016.

The highest number of acceptances by stables and trainers include David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig (27), Hawkes Racing (26) Mick Price (20), Peter and Paul Snowden (20) and Godolphin (18).

Other leading Sydney and NSW trainers with high second acceptance numbers include Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott (16), Paul Perry (10), Bjorn Baker Racing (9), and the trainer of last year’s winner She Will Reign, Gary Portelli (13).

Amongst the leading sires with the highest number of runners include I Am Invincible (33), Snitzel (31), Exceed and Excel (21), Fastnet Rock (19) and two former winners of the race Pierro (17) and Sebring (16).

There are 193 colts and geldings and 165 fillies in the second acceptances.

Australian Turf Club Joint Acting Chief Executive James Heddo said the ATC was thrilled with the record interest in this year’s race.

“The Longines Golden Slipper is a race watched around the world and continues to be the race that shapes the Australian racing and breeding industry like no other,’’ Mr Heddo said.

“Last year we saw an incredible story with She Will Reign, a $20,000 purchase that gave her huge syndicate of owners a lifetime of memories.

“With just nine weeks remaining until the Longines Golden Slipper, the owners and trainers of 358 horses continue to live that same dream.

“The Longines Golden Slipper is Western Sydney’s signature race and we look forward to hosting one of the biggest and best Slipper days in recent times on Saturday 24 March.’’
