The Australian Turf Club’s hugely popular night racing season at Canterbury Park has opened to another record crowd with a huge turnout of families from the local community.
A total of 8,874 people attended Kia Friday Night Racing opening night, presented by Schweppes, amid a vibrant atmosphere of food markets, free children’s entertainment including an appearance by The Wiggles characters, a petting zoo and an autograph signing session with star jockey Tommy Berry.
Last night’s crowd was more than 1,000 people above the previous all-time record set last year, and almost double the previous season’s opening night attendance.
Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour was amongst the opening night record crowd.
Mr Asfour mixed with locals on the lawn and presented the winning sash to the connections of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Miss Spiteful after Race 3.
Patrons gathered in huge numbers around 35 food stalls spread across the spacious Canterbury Park lawn areas, as well as new spaces closer to the Mounting Yard.
SKY Racing’s on-course Sky Thoroughbred Central broadcast added further entertainment to the night with a special pass the football competition, won by top jockey Brenton Avdulla.
The Australian Turf Club has enhanced the main stage and viewing platform on the public lawn area, with patrons enjoying live music entertainment in between races.
Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Commercial Corina Black said the opening of Kia Friday Night Racing at Canterbury Park had continued record growth in crowds at the popular venue.
“There is a unique atmosphere at the night meetings which are attracting large numbers of young families and groups of friends looking to start their weekend with a fun and affordable night out,” Ms Black said.
“The huge range of food options, family entertainment and great racing are a perfect mix in the balmy late spring and early summer months.”
Kia Night Racing at Canterbury Park has a further nine meetings this season until the end of February, with the next meeting on Friday 29 November.
