Whether you’re a newcomer to the ‘Sport of Kings’, or you can always be found trackside come race day – nothing beats being able to attend a meeting with your significant other by your side. The thrill of placing your bets, fused with the compelling theatre that is Race Day fashion, is only heightened when you experience it as a couple. Just as you would carefully consider a bet, stepping out together at a racing event requires some preparation. Ideally you will be conveying your own unique sense of style, whilst complimenting and enhancing that of your partner’s. There are no hard and fast rules for looking your best at the races, but here’s some essential tips to get you on the right track – whether that be Royal Randwick or Rosehill Gardens!

What Suits You Best?

The Everest Carnival, and indeed any race meet, is the perfect opportunity for men to embrace the world of fashion. You may prefer to stick to a timeless look or you may jump at the chance to push boundaries and make a statement with your attire instead. Regardless of your predilections, you will be in good form on the day if you prepare in advance.

When considering a races outfit, you should first decide what style you want to project. There are as many styles of suits for the races as there are horses and jockeys. To say that you’ll be spoilt for choice is more than a safe bet. If you’re drawn to a more classic look, go for a casual shirt that is light in colour, say white or pink. You can team this shirt with blazers or suit jackets of a darker shade like black or navy. If you would rather stand out from the crowd, reach for a suit that commands attention. Look for a colour that pops, or a striking pattern. The blue suit has made a huge resurgence and is perfect for the fashion forward.

Face the Music

Race days are ideal for celebrating with family and friends, and you’ll undoubtedly want to take lots of photos to remember the occasion. Many ladies opt for a fresh, long lasting daytime makeup look when they come to the track, and it makes sense. You’ll be indoors, walking from the mounting yard to the bookmakers, in all sorts of weather conditions (but hopefully, fine and sunny!). It’s hard to maintain extremely heavy eye makeup over the course of the entire day, and you won’t want to distract too much from your choice of dress and fascinator. Try opting for a dewy look teamed with a bold lip colour.

Be sure to stay sun smart. You want your lasting memory of the day to be all the fun you had as a couple, not a nasty sunburn. If you’re considering overhauling your skin care routine ahead of a race day, make sure you introduce any new products well in advance to give your skin time to adjust. To keep your cool as things heat up, consider taking alone a small facial mist in your handbag. Perfect for staying refreshed and hydrated, and some even double as a setting spray! If you’re not sure what is right for your skin, go for a rose mist. Rose is a nourishing ingredient and tends to suit most skin types.

Attending the races is always more fun when you are part of a group, and it’s a fantastic event to attend as a couple. You get to dress to impress, and experience all the excitement the sport has to offer with your significant other by your side. Granted, the races are not a spur-of-the-moment date. Preparation is required before you step out together and if you do the necessary groundwork, you’ll both be looking like winners come race day.

There will be masks available for purchase at outlets, cafes and bars across the Everest Carnival. The masks come in four different designs and are $15 per mask, with all proceeds going to the ATC Foundation.
