PUNTERS TARGET VALUE IN XXXX WJ MCKELL CUP AT ROSEHILL GARDENS

June 16, 2021

The Listed $150,000 XXXX WJ McKell Cup continues Sydney’s series of middle and long distance Winter races at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday on a nine-race card.

A total of 119 horses have accepted for Saturday’s meeting including 12 runners in the XXXX WJ McKell Cup and capacity fields in five other races.

Jockey Jay Ford is looking to win a record-equalling fourth XXXX WJ McKell Cup aboard Mr Satchmo on Saturday for Sydney’s soon-to-be 11-time Metropolitan Trainers Premiership champion Chris Waller.

Ford has previously won the race on Zavite (2007), dual-Group 1 winner Fiumicino (2013) and the evergreen Cups winner Destiny’s Kiss (2018).

After winning the WJ McKell at just its 12th-start, Zavite won a number of feature staying races including an Adelaide Cup, Auckland Cup, a close second in the 2010 Group 1 Tancred Stakes at Rosehill Gardens before winning the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes in 2011.

Champion jockey and highly popular Australian Turf Club Member Ray Selkrig holds the record for most wins by a jockey in the WJ McKell Cup.

When TAB first opened final field markets on Wednesday morning, four horses were joint favourites at $5.50.

They were the Chris Waller trained pair So You Win (Nash Rawiller) and Yonkers (Hugh Bowman), along with the Bjorn Baker trained and Jason Collett ridden Parry Sound and Stockman for Warwick Farm trainer Joe Pride and jockey Sam Clipperton.

Five other runners were priced from $9 to $14 in Saturday’s race – amongst one of the widest open betting races in many weeks.
