New Racing Year Jumps At Rosehill Gardens With Jockey Celebration

Jockeys past and present will be celebrated – along with Sydney’s champion trainer, jockey and apprentice – as The Australian Turf Club hosts Jockey Celebration Day at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

This Saturday marks the first Sydney Metropolitan meeting for the 2026/27 racing season.

The ATC with the NSW Jockeys Association and Australian Racing Christian Chaplaincy will hold a special ceremony in the Rosehill Gardens mounting yard with current and former jockeys.

Jockeys will form separate guards of honour and be part of a prayer and recognition service after race 7.

The ATC will also recognise the 2025/26 Sydney Metropolitan champions for trainers, jockeys and apprentices after the running of race 1.

Rosehill Gardens based Chris Waller secured his 16^th consecutive Sydney premiership, jockey James McDonald claimed a tenth Sydney jockeys title (including eight in succession) and Siena Grima is the Champion Apprentice.

Along with several races named in honour of the NSW Jockeys Association and others at the raceday on the 10-race card, races on Saturday have also been named to recognise those premiership winners.

Australian Turf Club Chief Executive Steve McMahon congratulated Sydney’s champion trainer and jockeys as a new racing season begins.

“Sydney racing is known as one of the world’s strongest and most competitive centres so winning a jockey or trainers premiership is a significant achievement,’’ Mr McMahon said.

“We salute Chris, James and Siena for their skill and professionalism in reaching these marks in their careers.

“The first metropolitan meeting of a new season is a fitting moment to recognise these winners alongside current and former jockeys and trainers who have created their own history and moments at Sydney racecourses.

“We also thank the NSW Jockeys Association and the ARCC who are an integral part of the success and celebration of Sydney racing.’’

Rosehill Gardens’ 10-race card will start at 11:25am and conclude with the final race at 4:45pm.
