The Summer Cup was first run in 1880 and will have its 140th running this year.
The Summer Cup has had some dual winners – Blue Metal (1899, 1900), King Of The Forest (1921, 1923), Donald (1928, 1929) and more recently I’m Imposing (2013, 2014).
The only dead-heat in the history of the race was in 1932, when Pretzel and Miss Nottava (NZ) crossed with nothing between them.
The race, over 2000m, tends to favour older horses, though Amberspear (1942) is the only nine-year-old to win.
The Christmas Cup, first run in 1948, is also run around this time of year, with winners of both the Summer Cup and Christmas Cup including Snowstream (1949), Sandy’s Hope (1968) and Ready To Lift (2008).
