HISTORY OF THE COOLMORE CLASSIC

March 9, 2023

The Coolmore Classic is the first Group 1 race of the Sydney Autumn Carnival and was first run in 1973.

A race for fillies and mares it has been won by many a champion including Bounding Away (pictured) in 1987.

The great Sunline is the only horse to have dual wins in the Coolmore Classic being successful in 2000 and then again in 2002.

Ron Quinton has the unusual distinction of winning the Coolmore Classic as both a jockey and a trainer. He won the first running of the race aboard Miss Personality in 1973 and again aboard Emancipation in 1984.

As a trainer, Quinton trained Ofcourseican to the win in 2012 ridden by Kathy O’Hara and Peeping in 2016. Then in 2018 and 2019 Quinton trained stable mates Daysee Doom and Dixie Blossoms to respective wins.
