YOUNG GUNS READY TO TREAD ON GOLDEN PATHS AT ROSEHILL GARDENS

August 24, 2022

Rosehill Gardens hosts two key pathway races to further Sydney spring glory with the running this Saturday of the Group 3 $200,000 Furphy San Domenico Stakes and Group 3 $200,000 Bowermans Up and Coming Stakes.

Ahead of the biggest spring in Sydney racing history, Saturday’s races will further shape TAB betting markets on upcoming Group 1 features including the $1 million Chandon Golden Rose (24 September) and $2 million Moët & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes (22 October).

Best Of Bordeaux – returning after a second placing in the Group 1 Longines Golden Slipper – has opened a solid $2.40 TAB Fixed Odds favourite in the Group 3 Furphy San Domenico Stakes for trainer Kacey Fogden and champion Sydney jockey James McDonald.

The Snitzel colt has had all three career starts at Rosehill Gardens and has won on good and soft tracks and is already a joint $6 TAB Fixed Odds early favourite for the Group 1 Chandon Golden Rose.

Second TAB favourite Nettuno ($7-$6.50 TAB) is unbeaten in his only three starts for Queensland trainer Tony Gollan and will be ridden by Hugh Bowman.

Spacewalk for the powerful James Cummings lead Godolphin stable is at $7.50 TAB for jockey Jason Collett while another unbeaten colt in Zoukerino for Royal Randwick trainer John O’Shea and with Brenton Avdulla aboard has been well-supported early ($9.50-$8 TAB).

In the past 22 runnings of the San Domenico, half of the winners have started first or second favourite while another seven runners have been on either the third or fourth line of betting.

In the day’s second feature the Group 3 $200,000 Bowermans Up and Coming Stakes, highly-promising Chris Waller Racing runner Conqueror for jockey William Pike has opened a $3.50-$3.70 TAB Fixed Odds favourite, ahead of Kibou ($4.80-$4.40 TAB) for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and jockey Regan Bayliss.

Conqueror is also an early $8 TAB Fixed Odds favourite for the Group 1 $2 million Moët & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes.

Jockey James McDonald – looking to win a fourth consecutive Bowermans Up and Coming Stakes – rides Basquiat ($10-$7 TAB) for trainer Chris Waller.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering James Ross said Saturday’s pathways to features for three-year-olds were a prelude to an exciting Sydney spring.

“It’s always pleasing to see these crops of three-year-olds return as we head towards Group 1s of the stature of the Chandon Golden Rose and Moet and Chandon Spring Champion Stakes,’’ Mr Ross said.

“We also welcome on a strong card this Saturday the strengthening of a partnership base between the ATC and Goffs and Irish Thoroughbreds Marketing as part of the raceday.’’
