Obamburumai Creates History In James Squire Golden Eagle

Becomes the first international horse to win the $10 million feature event

November 4, 2023

James Squire Golden Eagle Day hit tremendous new highs this afternoon at Rosehill Gardens.

The $10 million James Squire Golden Eagle saw its first international success story, thanks to Josh Parr‘s ride on Japanese raider, Obamburumai. It was the first time a horse outside Australia had taken out the premier four-year-old feature.

Parr positioned the entire midfield on the rails and waited patiently on straightening to find an opening. Hunting inside runs, Parr found the gaps at the right time and Obamburumai did the rest, powering home to overhaul the Godolphin pair of Pericles and Golden Mile in a great finish.

Not only was it a win for connections, Parr and trainer Keiji Yoshimura, Riding For The Disabled NSW benefitted as being the charity that was associated with the winner. They received $525,000 with a total of $1 million being donated to various charities through the race.

Other highlights on a spectacular day of racing at Rosehill Gardens included:

*Craig Williams producing a gem of a ride to score an upset with Bella Nipotina in the $3 million Giga Kick Stakes, knocking off defending champion Private Eye and his TAB Everest champion stablemate, Think About It

*Dylan Gibbons continuing his brilliant form in the saddle, finding space over the concluding stages to push Sweet Mercy through and capture the Four Pillars Midway

*Tyler Schiller keeping Wild Planet out of trouble and allowing the horse to power over the top of his rivals to score the $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup

*Nash Rawiller bookending the program with Tribeca Star (Matthew Dunn) and Way To The Stars (Matthew Smith)

*Nine different jockeys winning races on the Rosehill Gardens program

With eight days of the Sydney Everest Carnival now completed, attention will turn to Royal Randwick for Tuesday’s Big Dance on Cup Day meeting.
