Five Questions With Kerrin McEvoy
October 14, 2021
Ahead of the 2021 TAB Everest, who better to catch up with than three-time TAB Everest winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy? We spoke to him to hear about how he prepares for THE TAB Everest and his most memorable win.
1. What do you do to prepare before a big racE like the Tab everest?
I keep the same routine, this year is a little different as we haven’t been riding trackwork, I’ll swim Monday after trials, train Tuesday with my PT, race ride Wednesday at Warwick farm, train again Thursday and then have a swim Friday. I’ll also do all my Prep work watching replays of races and trying to work out the best way to ride each horse I’m hopping onboard this Saturday. Saturday morning I’ll have a warm up and a stretching routine that I’ll complete before racing starts. Saturday mornings I just can’t wait to get to the track and get stuck in.
2. You’ve won 79 career Group 1 races to date, what has been your most memorable or favourite win?
My first Melbourne Cup was pretty special…. As was my first TAB Everest!
Kerrin won his first Melbourne Cup in 2000 on Brew who was trained by Mike Moroney.
3. If you had one tip for aspiring jockeys, what would it be?
Just to be patient and to be willing to listen and learn, as a rider there are always things to work on, so surround yourself with people who know what they are talking about. Guidance in those early years is crucial to a jockeys development.
4. What is the favourite thing about your career?
Riding these beautiful animals in big prestigious races is what I enjoy the most; it’s a special feeling the be on the back of a Thoroughbred and pass the line first in the big race that day.
5. If you weren’t a jockey, what would you be?
Good question… I’m not sure… I’d be involved in racing somewhere, it’s in my blood.
Catch Kerrin McEvoy and the beautiful grey, Classique Legend this Saturday in the $15 million TAB Everest at Royal Randwick.
