Five Questions With Debbie Kepitis

August 17, 2021

In honour of Winx Stakes Day (21 August), we thought it only fitting to catch up with part-owner and racing obsessed Debbie Kepitis to discuss all things racing and most importantly her LOVE for the legendary mare, Winx.

1: What is your earliest or favourite memory of horse racing?

Dad was the influence for me loving racing, but it started with hate. Every Saturday morning, we would be greeted at breakfast by a blaring radio giving out the scratchings. There was to be not a sound until this was finished. As time went by instead, we’d sneak into his office as the races ran hoping our pick would win.

Gai Waterhouse after winning the 1995 Ranvet Stakes with Stoney Bay.

2: If you could meet any horse or racing personality dead or alive, who would it be?

I have been fortunate to have met many amazing people in racing. I greatly admire Gai Waterhouse. She was able to forge a pathway for women in racing, but has never forgotten how to be a woman. It says much about her that a lot of the people working for her refer to her as mother.

Gai Waterhouse is an Australian horse trainer and daughter of trainer Tommy J.Smith.  Gai was granted her Australian Jockey Club License in 1992.

3: If you had one tip about attending the races, what would it be?

The best part of attending the races is to be able to see the horses in the flesh. Visiting the race day stalls and watching the parade ring before the race is brilliant. Seeing the horses moving so fluidly and showing any and all their traits.

4: What is the favourite thing about BEING A RACEHORSE OWNER?

Owning a race horse has many different sides, but my favourite would be being in the parade ring pre-race. Watching them warm up with their heads held high and how they react to the jockey jumping on is magic! Also, the fun of coming up with a name for your yearling.

5: And… rather importantly, what was YOUR FAVOURITE WINX MOMENT?

All my Winx moments are my favourite. I was privileged to have been so close to her throughout her amazing carpet ride… So to choose one Winx moment is too hard.

BONUS QUESTION:  If you were a racehorse, what would you be called?

Slow and Steady.
