FIRST STEPS TO LONGINES GOLDEN SLIPPER AT INGLIS OFFICIAL 2YO TRIALS
September 19, 2021
The first steps toward the Australian Turf Club’s iconic $3.5 million Longines Golden Slipper will be taken at the Inglis Official Two-Year-Old Trials at Royal Randwick on Monday.
Nine heats – four for the fillies and five for colts and geldings – will be run on the Kensington track from 9am as the “babies” contest their first public trials ahead of two key early Spring races.
Monday’s heats determine first starters in the Group 3 $160,000 Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate for the colts and geldings and the Group 3 $160,000 Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes for fillies at Royal Randwick on TAB Epsom Day, 2 October.
Hosted behind closed doors due to COVID protocols, the ATC plans to thanks the strappers for their ongoing, diligent work in keeping racing going, with breakfast provided for those on course.
The trials will also be broadcast live on SKY Thoroughbred Central with an enhanced coverage hosted by Greg Radley, Ron Dufficy and Ally Mosley.
Full fields for the trials can be found here.
The Spring pathway to the Group 1 $3.5 million Longines Golden Slipper includes the $1 million Golden Gift at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday 6 November.
First acceptances for the 2021 $3.5 million Group 1 Longines Golden Slipper close on Tuesday 5 October, 2020.
Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing and Wagering James Ross said the trials were a highlight of early Spring in Sydney.
“The Inglis Official 2YO Trials are a crucial step in a young horse’s path towards their first start and perhaps ultimately running in the iconic Longines Golden Slipper,’’ Mr Ross said.
“The horses on Monday will use the Theatre Of The Horse and go out to the barriers just like a raceday as they aim to qualify for the first Sydney two year old races of the season.’’
Inglis General Manager of Bloodstock Sales and Marketing Sebastian Hutch said: ““It’s always such an exciting time of year when the new crop of 2YOs step out for the first time in public at the annual Inglis Official 2YO Trials.
“So much time and effort has gone into getting these horses to this stage of their careers, and it’s with great anticipation that we now get to see how they have developed from yearlings at the sales through to racehorses.”
