Coolmore Dual Winner - Sunline
March 17, 2022
Champion mare Sunline is the only horse to have dual wins in the Coolmore Classic. She won in 2000 and 2002 ridden both times by Greg Childs, her regular rider. Over her racing career, Sunline had 13 Group 1 wins in Australia and overseas. These included wins in the Doncaster (twice), Cox Plate (twice), All Aged Stakes (twice), Flight Stakes, Tea Rose Stakes, and the Apollo Stakes (twice). Altogether she won 32 of her 48 starts.
Full of brilliant race mares, it’s hard to single out only a few for mention. The winner in 1984 was Emancipation. Trained by Neville Begg and mostly ridden by Ron Quinton she won the Doncaster and George Ryder Stakes as a three-year-old and at four years won four Group 1 races. Her duels with the champion three-year-old colt Sir Dapper in the autumn of 1984 (defeating him twice) are the stuff of modern racing legend.
Owned, trained, and bred by TJ Smith, champion filly Bounding Away (by Biscay out of Who Can Say) had a very successful racing career. Her Coolmore Classic win in 1987 followed success in the 1986 Golden Slipper, Champagne Stakes, the Blue Diamond Stakes, and the Flight Stakes. She would also win the 1987 AJC Oaks and be named Australian Horse of the Year for 1985-1986. At stud Bounding Away produced stakes winner In A Bound.
