The Australian Turf Club has paid tribute to prominent owner, breeder and racing administrator Don Storey, who passed away peacefully yesterday aged 86.
Mr Storey served on the Sydney Turf Club Committee from 1970 until 2001, including a lengthy period as Vice-Chairman.
He joined the STC as a Member in December 1960 and was awarded STC Life Membership in 1980.
Mr Storey was also well-known as a thoroughbred owner for almost 50 years, including in recent times Rain Affair, a four-time Group One placegetter who won nine races in a row on Sydney tracks in his black and gold quarters colours.
Mr Storey was also an owner of two Golden Slipper placegetters in Been There (second to Sir Dapper) and Boasting (third to Marauding).
Australian Turf Club Chairman Laurie Macri said Mr Storey along with his late wife Val were a regular and highly popular part of Sydney and Australian racing for many decades.
“Don held a great passion for racing as an administrator, owner and breeder but most of all was a wonderful husband to Val and a gentleman to all who knew him,’’ Mr Macri said.
“He served on the STC committee during some of the most successful and innovative times in the history of Sydney racing.
“We thank and pay tribute to Don and will always remember his wonderful contribution to thoroughbred racing.’’
The Australian Turf Club will name a race in Mr Storey’s honour at a forthcoming meeting.
