The Australian Turf Club has commenced a formal Expressions Of Interest process to fill the slot owned by the Club for the inaugural running of The Everest, the world’s richest thoroughbred race on turf, worth $10 million in prizemoney.

In setting out its criteria and calling for expressions of interest, the ATC announced today it will consider horses from across Australia and in international jurisdictions to take part in The Everest, which will be run over 1200m at weight for age on Saturday 14 October at Royal Randwick.

Among the criteria set but not limited to by the ATC in deciding its runner will be:

  • Career performance and international rating, along with performance at Group level, both throughout a horse’s career and also over the past 12 months;
  • Only horses who have won at Group level in recognised thoroughbred racing countries;
  • The commercial proposal put forward by owners or representatives.

Australian Turf Club Chief Executive Darren Pearce said selecting a runner was the first of many exciting stages ahead of the inaugural running of The Everest during the Sydney Spring Carnival.

“The Everest has very quickly caught the attention and imagination of the local and international racing world, and many owners, trainers and representatives have already publicly stated they want to run,’’ Mr Pearce said.

“The ATC will look to attract the very best sprinters to compete, and we hope the ATC Slot can be utilised by a horse that enhances the quality of the race and in turn promotes Sydney racing to the world.’’

The ATC’s closing time and date to lodge formal expressions will be 5pm, Friday 30 June, 2017.

The ATC intends to finalise its decision by Monday 31 July, 2017.
