Spring Launches Everest Hopes on a Day Full of Stars at Royal Randwick

2 September, 2026

A leading pathway race to the $20 million TAB Everest and three more feature Group races brings Spring excitement to Sydney at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

The Group 2 $1 million Catanach’s Jewellers Concorde Stakes sees last year’s TAB Everest runner-up Tempted begin her trek to the world’s richest race on turf – and a possible return clash with Ka Ying Rising on 17 October.

The Group 2 $300,000 Kia Ora Stud Furious Stakes, Group 2 $300,000 Asahi Super Dry Chelmsford Stakes and Group 2 $300,000 myPlates Tramway Stakes bring further equine power on a ten-race card.

Australian Turf Club Chief Executive Officer Steve McMahon said Sydney racing was heading into an unrivalled Spring.

“Outstanding weather on a perfect track as a backdrop to a cavalcade of star horses makes Royal Randwick THE place to be for live action,’’ Mr McMahon said.

“Week in and out we are seeing the best racing in Australia and you simply have to be here for it to fully enjoy the raceday experience.

“This year’s TAB Everest is selling out fast and on Saturday we see the build up continue to the ultimate sprint and punters ask the question can they beat Ka Ying Rising.’’

The Group 2 $1 million Catanach’s Jewellers Concorde Stakes has been a significant pointer to the Group 1 $20 million TAB Everest, starting with Redzel who completed a remarkable Concorde/Everest double in both 2017 and 2018, whilst Nature Strip also won both races in 2021.

On Saturday, star mare Tempted for Ciaron Maher and Chad Schofield opens a $1.90 TAB Fixed Odds favourite on a track she has won at five times from six starts.

Headwall, who won last year’s Catanach’s Jewellers Concorde Stakes, is at $4.60 TAB Fixed for trainer Matthew Smith and young gun jockey Zac Lloyd as he makes another bid for a TAB Everest slot.

In the Group 2 Asahi Super Dry Chelmsford Stakes, Lindermann for Chris Waller and Nash Rawiller opens at $2.70 TAB Fixed ahead of Joe Pride’s multiple Group 1 winner Ceolwulf with Chad Schofield aboard at $3.10.

Popular mare Fangirl is next at $3.80 (Chris Waller/James McDonald).

The Group 2 $300,000 myPlates Tramway Stakes sees talented mare Idle Flyer – off the back a strong return in the Group 1 Winx Stakes – at $2.70 TAB Fixed for trainer and jockey combination Matthew Smith and Zac Lloyd.

The evergreen nine-year-old Private Eye is at $4 TAB for trainer Joe Pride and jockey Nash Rawiller ahead of stablemate Headley Grange (Adam Hyeronimus) at $6 TAB Fixed.

The Group 2 Kia Ora Furious Stakes – the second leg of the Princess Series for the three-year-old fillies – features an early betting dual between Pembrey (Tony Gollan/Tommy Berry) at $2.20 TAB Fixed and Chilly Girl (Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou/Tim Clark) at $3.20.

Saturday’s 10-race card begins at 11.50am with the last race due to jump at 5.10pm.
