$81 Million Sydney Everest Carnival Bursting With Stars at Royal Randwick

A crack field of sprinters with several TAB Everest runners and a star line-up of weight for age horses are part of the official start of the $81 million Sydney Everest Carnival for Sydney Surf To Turf Day at Royal Randwick this Saturday.

The Group 2 $1 million Yarraman Park Shorts and $1 million 7 Stakes are two features on a 10-race card which includes four Group races and 148 entries.

Briasa, Private Harry and Joliestar – who all have secured slots in the $20 million TAB Everest – return to take on the reigning Golden Slipper winner Marhoona in the Yarraman Park Shorts over 1100m.

Fangirl, Ceolwulf, Gringotts and Private Eye – amongst some of the best horses in Australia – are part of a stellar field in the 7 Stakes.

And the Group 2 $300,000 myPlates Tea Rose Stakes, Group 3 $250,000 Bill Ritchie Handicap and Group 3 $250,000 Asahi Super Dry Kingston Town Stakes add to the opening of eight spectacular Saturdays of Spring carnival racing.

Australian Turf Club Head of Racing and Wagering Nevesh Ramdhani said Sydney was primed for world-class racing over several months.

“Spring in Sydney has become one of the world’s most watched and talked about carnivals in world racing as we head towards the world’s richest turf race the $20 million TAB Everest,’’ Mr Ramdhani said.

“The Yarraman Park Shorts is itself a ‘mini Everest’ this Saturday and begins several weeks of spectacular sprints which will further shape the final TAB Everest field.

“Many of the best three-year-old fillies in training in the myPlates Tea Rose and a full field in a crucial pathway to the Group 1 TAB Epsom in Saturday’s Bill Ritchie Handicap are other highlights on a spectacular start to the Sydney Everest Carnival.’’

The unbeaten Private Harry – trained by Nathan Doyle and with Ash Morgan to ride – opens a $2.50 TAB favourite as he opens his Everest campaign.

Briasa (Hawkes Racing/Tyler Schiller) at $4-$3.90 TAB and Joliestar (Chris Waller/James McDonald) at $4.60 also resume in the Yarraman Park Shorts.

Redzel in 2017 and Classique Legend in 2020 completed The Shorts/TAB Everest double while a host of placegetters in Saturday’s feature sprint have previously figured prominently on TAB  Everest honour rolls.

In the $1 million 7 Stakes, four-time Group 1 winner Fangirl for Chris Waller and James McDonald opens a $2.60 TAB favourite as the star mare looks to win the race two years in a row and add to her $10 million plus career prizemoney.

The Joe Pride trained Ceolwulf for jockey Chad Schofield is at $5 TAB ahead of Gringotts (Ciaron Maher/Tommy Berry) at $5.50 TAB.

The third leg of the Princess Series for fillies – the myPlates Tea Rose Stakes – sees a return clash of seven of the first eight across the line from the Furious Stakes.

Tupakara trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald with James McDonald aboard opens a $3.40 TAB favourite to turn the tables on Apocalyptic (Michael Freedman/Tommy Berry) at $3.80 TAB.

The Bjorn Baker and Jason Collett combination in Within The Law are at $4.40 ahead of the Gary Portelli stable’s Queen Of Clubs (Nash Rawiller) at $8 TAB.
