7 Things Every First-Time Racegoer Should Know Before a Big Day at the Track

Heading to your first raceday? 

Whether you’re dressing to impress for the Sydney Everest Carnival or planning a relaxed outing with friends, a day at the races is one of Sydney’s most spirited social experiences.  

From fashion and food to betting and transport, here’s what every first-time racegoer should know before stepping through the gates at Royal Randwick, Rosehill Gardens, Warwick Farm or Canterbury Park. 

1. What To Wear

Racewear is part of the fun – but it doesn’t have to be intimidating. 

  • Saturday meetings at Royal Randwick and Rosehill Gardens tend to be more formal, especially during Carnival time. Expect tailored suits, dresses and headwear. Midweek meetings are more laid back and subject to the Members Relaxed dress code. 
  • Members’ areas have stricter standards, so check ahead if you’re heading there.

2. Understanding Raceday Timings

Racedays follow a rhythm: 

  • Saturday race meetings will have 10 races and midweek often 7 or 8 races. 
  • Races are run approximately every 35 minutes with horses parading from approximately 10-15 minutes before the race. 
  • Gates generally open mid to late morning for Saturday meetings, however closer to noon for midweeks, but check raceday pages for more accurate timings. 

 

During Carnival time, the excitement continues with After The Last – a post-race celebration featuring DJs, live music and entertainment. This is exclusive to Carnival racedays at Royal Randwick.  

At other times of the year, and at Warwick Farm or Canterbury Park, the vibe is more laid-back, but still full of charm. Kia Friday Night racing at Canterbury during summer offers a great atmosphere, whether with the family or catching up with friends.

3. How to Place a Bet

Betting is a popular part of the raceday experience, and it’s easy to get involved: 

  • Use TAB terminals or download the TAB app for mobile betting. 
  • You can also place bets with on-course bookmakers, who offer competitive odds and a traditional experience. 
  • Start simple with a Win, Place, or Each Way bet, and don’t hesitate to ask staff for help.

4. Getting There and Home

All four racecourses are accessible via public transport: 

  • Royal Randwick: Light rail to Alison Road stop, or take one of the many bus routes which go past the track. 
  • Rosehill Gardens: Take the L4 light rail, or catch a train to Parramatta Station then jump on the regular 920 bus to the racecourse. 
  • Warwick Farm: Take a train to Warwick Farm Station, or catch one of the many buses from across Sydney. 
  • Canterbury Park: Catch a train to Sydenham or Ashfield stations, then transfer to a SW3 or 491 bus which stop within walking distance of the racecourse.

5. Food and Drink Options

Food and drink is a big part of the raceday experience. 

  • During Carnival time, expect a full range of outlets, pop-ups and activations, from champagne bars to gourmet bites. 
  • At midweek meetings and Warwick Farm, offerings are more limited but still satisfying. 
  • Canterbury Park’s night racing during warmer months is a standout, with food trucks and stalls creating a vibrant market atmosphere.

6. Where to Watch the Races

There are plenty of great vantage points across all venues: 

  • Trackside for the thrill of the finish 
  • Mounting yard to see the horses parading up close before they race  
  • Big screens for full coverage including near the winning post  
  • Members’ areas often offer less crowded views, especially on busy days 
  • Premium Dining offers an elevated way to experience the raceday while enjoying high-quality food and drink in comfort

7. What to Do Between Races

Carnival days feature live music, DJs, photo ops and entertainment, but even on quieter days, there’s plenty to enjoy: 

  • Grab a bite or drink from the outlets 
  • Visit the tie-up stalls to see the horses being prepared. 
  • Explore the venue and soak up the atmosphere 

 

Even at smaller tracks or midweek meetings, there’s always something to enjoy – whether it’s a quiet moment watching the horses or a bite from a local food stall.
