SILVER EAGLE DAY AT ROYAL RANDWICK SPRINGS TOWARDS GOLDEN GLORY
October 5, 2022
The $1 million Silver Eagle – a crucial qualifying race for Sydney’s second richest event the $10 million Golden Eagle – and four Group races feature on Saturday at Royal Randwick as the record-breaking Sydney Everest Carnival continues.
Saturday’s 10-race card with 150 entries also features the inaugural running of the $500,000 The Agency Tapp-Craig in honour of two of Sydney’s racing’s most decorated and respected racing broadcasters, John Tapp and Ian Craig.
The first three placegetters in Saturday’s $1 million Silver Eagle gain coveted entry and exemption from ballot for the $10 million Golden Eagle, to be run at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday 29 October.
In just the three runnings of the Silver Eagle, winners and placegetters have included future Group 1 winners in Ellsberg, Flit, Alligator Blood and Mizzy, whilst the race has also provided placegetters in each running of the Golden Eagle.
The Group 2 $300,000 Polytrack Roman Consul Stakes, along with the Group 3 $500,000 New TAB App Gloaming Stakes, Group 3 $200,000 The Nivison and Group 3 $200,000 Furphy Angst Stakes bring Blacktype to the program.
Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering James Ross said Saturday’s Silver Eagle Day was a pivotal part of Sydney’s growing $66 million spring.
“The $1 million Silver Eagle has attracted amongst its strongest field yet in a race which has quickly established itself as not only an important pathway to the $10 million Golden Eagle but a future pointer to Group 1 successes,’’ Mr Ross said.
“The Polytrack Roman Consul also continues to build an honour roll of future Group 1 winners and highly valued stallion prospects.
“This year’s increase to $2 million for the upcoming Moët & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes has seen a full field of three-year-olds from across Australia and New Zealand on that pathway via Saturday’s New TAB App Gloaming Stakes on Saturday.’’
